FREE COMMUNITY TRAINING · ADOPT-A-DUMPSTER™
Map your community. Build your skills. Earn recognition. Open doors.
Learn how to contribute useful observations that help communities understand commercial waste areas and stormwater pathways. Field submissions are for adults 18+ only. Minors may take part in educational activities only with school or guardian supervision, subject to staff confirmation of eligibility and permission; do not submit a field report for a minor. Do not post sensitive personal details or include faces, readable license plates, student records or personal details about others in photos or notes. This is introductory education, not an enforcement inspection or professional certification, and it does not promise a job.
Adults 18+: Submit a real field observation → See the Temecula 500 Challenge →
What you will learn
Explore eight short topics. Read the lesson, review the safe example, and use the informal knowledge check for learning feedback. Classroom practice uses hypothetical examples without submitting photos or locations. These lessons and self-checks do not award points, grades, professional qualifications, certificates, academic credit, money or paid work.
-
Why dumpster areas matter
Rain contacting exposed waste can create runoff concerns. Learn the difference between observing a condition and proving a discharge.
-
Wet Trash 101
Understand rainwater entering containers, soaked cardboard, waste-contact water and how keeping lids closed helps limit exposure.
-
Map safely
Stay on public property or locations you are authorized to enter. Never open lids, handle waste, enter traffic, trespass, confront workers or map during hazardous weather.
-
Take one useful photo and capture location
For classroom learning, discuss a hypothetical observation without collecting or submitting photos, addresses or GPS coordinates. Adults 18+ may voluntarily use the live observation form for a lawful observation. Photograph only what you may lawfully see; do not include people or readable license plates.

-
Answer the three observation questions
Is waste visibly exposed to rain? Is there loose trash or overflow? Is a storm drain or obvious drainage route nearby? Choose Yes, No or Unsure. Never guess a violation.
-
Understand verification and privacy
Submissions and photos remain private for review. Duplicates may become updates to an existing site. The public map normally uses generalized area markers unless individual site recognition is approved.
-
Join Temecula 500
Build coverage through quality, accuracy, safety and consistency. Verified unique locations count toward 500; submitted observations do not automatically count or award points.
-
Turn service into skills
Keep accurate records of training, verified contributions and real service hours. Qualified learners may eventually seek team leadership, service-learning opportunities and separately authorized internships or field roles.
Download the printable education collection
Print-friendly visual learning sheets covering 8 Volunteer Academy topics and 10 public introductory Inspector Academy topics. Choose your paper size. The 18-page collection is educational reference material—not a complete inspector manual, professional credential or municipal certification.
Both files contain the same 18 educational topics in different print formats. These PDFs are classroom education—not permission for minors to submit field reports or use the live form. Real field submissions are for adults 18+ only; supervised youth learning uses hypothetical examples without submitting photos or locations. Full online lessons and self-checks remain available above.
What happens after a field observation?
Observe → Photograph → Answer → Submit → Learn → Private review → Map another. An observation may be rejected or marked as a follow-up; it is not an official regulatory determination. Use the existing Start Mapping form for live submissions.
For schools and community groups
Teams can learn field safety, mapping, stewardship and ethical documentation. Academic credit is not automatic; each school must approve its own arrangements. We will distinguish verified mapping records from independently verified service hours.
This is introductory public education. No grades, points, certificates, licenses, academic credit, or employment opportunities are awarded by completing these lessons.
