TEMECULA 500
Help map 500 commercial waste locations.
One photo. Three quick questions. Each verified observation helps build a privacy-first community picture of commercial waste areas, rain exposure and potential stormwater pathways.
Challenge progress
Status: pilot intake and verification setup
Only verified unique dumpster locations count toward the 500-location challenge total. Follow-up and duplicate observations are tracked separately and do not inflate progress. This pilot figure is supplied by the program summary feed; staff review and unique-site audit reconciliation remain pending.

Temecula 500 is the flagship city challenge. We're preparing a friendly Temecula vs. Franklin, Tennessee Race to 500 educational kickoff for November 2. See the two-city announcement. Explore both cities on our live community map. The prize competition is not yet open. Official eligibility rules and the site-verification process require final approval before any entries can qualify.
Nearby repeat submissions are screened before verification. Legitimate follow-ups stay attached to the original Site ID and do not inflate the 500-location goal.
What counts?
- A unique commercial dumpster or waste enclosure
- One usable photo taken from a lawful location
- The three core observation questions completed
- Enough location information to verify the observation
- Human review before the observation affects totals, points or prizes
What does not earn credit?
- Duplicate observations of the same location without a valid follow-up purpose
- Unsafe or trespassing submissions
- Unusable photos or unverifiable locations
- Manipulated, fraudulent or misleading submissions
- Extra points for finding a location that looks “worse” than another
Pilot missions
Missions direct people toward useful participation instead of rewarding negative conditions.

Leaderboard
The leaderboard opens when verified challenge activity begins. Rankings will use approved program rules, not raw upload volume.
Teams
Schools, businesses, service clubs, HOAs, veteran groups and community organizations will be able to map together without exposing individual home addresses or private site data.
Map as a team.
Businesses, schools, service clubs, HOAs, veteran groups, environmental organizations and public-agency teams can participate together. We verify the adult team lead before any team appears publicly.
- Team standings will use verified observations only
- Minor participants are not publicly identified on individual leaderboards
- Teams can receive mission assignments and challenge codes
- Corporate teams can use the challenge for employee community engagement
No team is displayed publicly until it is verified and opts into recognition.

How future challenge scoring may work
No points, prizes or Race to 500 competition credit are active today. The ideas below describe possible future scoring, not currently available rewards. Any future points or awards would require approved eligibility rules, real sponsor funding, a verified unique Site ID and authorized launch. Educational observations submitted before official opening are not retroactive contest entries.
- Verified unique observation: base credit
- Useful coverage in an unmapped area: bonus credit
- Completed structured mission: bonus credit
- Verified improvement: highest-value credit
- Duplicate, unsafe, unusable or unverifiable submission: no credit
One rule is permanent.
No extra points for finding a “bad,” “dirty,” “high-risk” or noncompliant-looking location. The game rewards participation, coverage, quality and improvement, not negativity.
Mapper badges
Badges unlock from verified participation. They do not reward severity or public shaming.
As verified observations are approved, the public map will show generalized coverage, clusters, community progress and verified improvements. Exact business locations and photos are not published by default.

The map experience is already designed around three views: public aggregate progress, opted-in participating sites, and a private municipal operating view.

$500 sponsor commitment
Steel Building USA has committed $500 toward a proposed two-city prize pool. The working allocation is $250 per city, with 16 proposed gift-card and merchandise awards ($450 combined) and up to $50 for fulfillment. The money and prize inventory have not yet been confirmed as received. The competition and awards are NOT open: final rules, funding, lawful eligibility and human-verification safeguards must be approved before launch.
Make the first map.
The first 500 distinct, human-verified sites can help make the national program better, safer and more useful. Duplicate or unverified submissions do not count toward the goal.
Community observations are educational and participatory. They are not regulatory inspections or findings of violation.
