6 — Waste Stream Basics

Adopt-A-Dumpster Inspector Academy cover for Waste Stream Basics

Different containers

A site may use containers for landfill trash, recycling, flattened cardboard or food/organics. Signage and visible exterior cues may help describe them.

Avoid assumptions

Bin colors, labels and collection rules vary by jurisdiction and hauler; verify local practice before inferring improper separation.

Observation, not sorting

Field learners can note visibly exposed material but cannot rummage, move or inspect internal waste.

Practice scenario

An unlabelled container appears to have cardboard protruding. Identify only what is visible, not its intended contents or compliance status.

Knowledge check

Should an observer open a lid to verify sorting?

Recommended answer: No. Volunteers and introductory learners do not open or handle containers.

This self-check is educational. It does not issue a certificate, authorization, exam score or continuing education credit.
