INTRODUCTORY INSPECTOR ACADEMY · TOPIC 8 OF 10
8 — Drainage and Visible Runoff

Visible cues
Look for curb inlets, gutters, surface slope cues or pooled water from a safe viewpoint.
Competing explanations
Staining or wet pavement can have numerous sources; a photo may document appearance, not composition.
Escalation boundary
Possible releases of unknown or hazardous liquids require staff/authority procedures. Do not touch, sample or approach a hazard.
Practice scenario
A wet streak runs toward a catch basin after rainfall. Describe the streak and location rather than alleging a specific chemical or a confirmed discharge.
Knowledge check
Can appearance alone identify the composition of a puddle?
Recommended answer: No. Do not infer unseen pollutants or hazards from color alone.
This self-check is educational. It does not issue a certificate, authorization, exam score or continuing education credit.
