How the challenge is designed

  1. Learn first: Read the safe community mapping guide. Observe from a place where you are lawfully permitted to stand. Never enter traffic, touch waste, or climb into a dumpster.
  2. Document carefully: Use the public mapping form to submit one useful photo, accurate location context and three quick answers: visible rain exposure, loose trash or overflow, and nearby drainage. Submissions stay private for review; only eligible, unique, human-verified entries can count toward Race to 500 results.
  3. Wait for review: Every observation is held privately for human verification. Repeated photos of the same physical enclosure do not create extra unique-site credit.
  4. Follow verified progress: Only accurate city-level aggregate totals appear publicly; property identities and private observations are protected.
Community map live — race registration and verification next. You can explore both cities and learn to document safely now. Race-eligible entries and public scoreboards will begin only after the protected intake and human-verification process passes review and final official rules are approved and published.

Who is sponsoring the prizes?

Steel Building USA is the proposed founding prize-pool sponsor for the inaugural Temecula vs. Franklin Race to 500. The owner-approved $500 budget design allocates $250 to Temecula and $250 to Franklin. Sponsor funding and prize inventory have not yet been verified as received.

The owner-approved prize design provides for 16 potential awards — eight per city, with $450 in gift cards and merchandise plus up to $50 in fulfillment costs. These awards are not open or guaranteed. The competition requires final official rules, verified sponsor funding, an approved review process and formal opening before any mapping can earn race credit. No purchase or donation will be required if the competition opens.

Community Leaderboards — Coming Soon

Once the privacy, contribution and reviewer checks are approved, these boards will recognize documented results, not promises. No business or volunteer is ranked from an inquiry, pledge or unreviewed photo. Public recognition is optional.

Site Protection Sponsors

Leaderboard status: Verification pending — no approved rankings yet.

Planned metrics: distinct sites actually sponsored, completed covers or improvements, and independently documented environmental outcomes where measurable. Sponsors choose whether their business name or logo is displayed.

Race Prize-Pool Supporters

Leaderboard status: Funding and gift inventory verification pending.

Approved acknowledgments may recognize received gift cards, merchandise and sponsor funding separately from unreceived pledges. Prize donations do not earn dumpster-site or environmental-impact credit.

More recognition is planned: opt-in volunteer/community mapper and property-owner participation boards, with national and city views. Only verified contributions will be eligible; exact property locations, personal contacts and unconsented names stay private.

Positive participation, never public enforcement: A volunteer photo is not evidence of a legal violation or proof that polluted water entered a drain. We do not publish accusation maps or unapproved identifiable property photos. No city endorsement is implied.

The race score, when officially opened, will show only human-reviewed unique site counts. Results remain provisional until final review and appeals end. A public score does not indicate a violation at any property.
