Standing Water & Mosquitoes
A trash area does not need to be a pond to create a water-holding container. Standing water deserves attention because mosquitoes lay eggs in or near water.
What the CDC recommends
The CDC tells households and communities to empty, scrub, turn over, cover or discard water-holding items, explicitly including trash containers. The principle is simple: remove the water before larvae develop.
Where water can collect around waste areas
- Open trash or recycling containers.
- Damaged lids with low spots.
- Discarded buckets, cups or containers near an enclosure.
- Tarps and plastic sheeting.
- Blocked drains or depressions in the pad.
- Unused containers waiting for service.
What to do
Drain or remove standing water where practical, close lids, correct blocked drainage and eliminate loose items that can hold rain. Persistent standing water in a place that cannot simply be emptied may need evaluation by the property team or local vector-control program.
