Overflow & Windblown Trash

Trash does not need to dissolve in water to become a stormwater problem. Wind and rain can move loose material into gutters, drains and waterways.

Why Close the Lid education poster

Containment comes first

Overfilled dumpsters make lid closure difficult, expose lightweight material to wind and create more loose waste around the enclosure. Bags, film, food wrappers, cups, cardboard and other debris can leave the site before anyone notices.

Rain and wind do the transporting

EPA’s Trash Free Waters program explains that poorly contained garbage can be carried by rain and wind into storm drains, streams, canals and rivers. That makes container capacity and housekeeping part of trash prevention, not just appearance.

Practical prevention

  • Keep waste below the rim.
  • Increase pickup frequency during high-volume periods.
  • Close lids after each use.
  • Pick up loose material before forecast rain or wind.
  • Keep enclosure gates and surrounding areas maintained.
