Food Waste + Rain

Food-service waste areas combine moisture, organic residue, grease, frequent use and heavy loading. Wet-weather housekeeping matters.

Why food-service enclosures are different

Restaurant and grocery waste can include food residue, packaging, grease, organics and leaking bags. Rain can spread those residues across an enclosure pad if lids are open, containers leak or loose material accumulates outside the container.

Good practices are basic

  • Keep lids closed whenever the container is not being loaded.
  • Keep grease and tallow containers tightly covered.
  • Clean spills promptly with dry methods or absorbents.
  • Do not hose waste residue toward a storm drain.
  • Have leaking dumpsters or compactors serviced.
  • Plan enough service capacity to avoid chronic overflow.

The goal is source control

A food-service business does not need to solve stormwater at the end of the pipe if it can prevent food residue, grease and loose trash from entering runoff in the first place.
