The Rain Math Behind an Exposed Dumpster Area

Adopt-A-Dumpster™ uses a simple rainfall-volume estimate to help explain how much water can land on an exposed dumpster enclosure.

The formula

Estimated gallons = enclosure footprint in square feet × rainfall in inches × 0.623

One inch of rain on one square foot is about 0.623 gallons. That means a 200-square-foot enclosure receives about 125 gallons from one inch of rain.

What the estimate means

The number represents rainfall volume over the measured footprint. It is not a laboratory measurement of pollutants, a regulatory discharge calculation or a claim that every gallon becomes contaminated runoff.
